His neighbor was pleased to announce that the three baby barn swallows in the mud nest affixed to the rock wall above the entrance door on his front porch have "flown the coop" for the first time in their brief lives last Saturday. Now, they are flying all over the neighborhood. He loves those darling little birds, the fast, agile, daring, darting, stream-lined aerial acrobats. Their parents fly with them and like to observe their progress from the telephone pole high lines. In the early evening, they perch on the metal conduit cross-bars suspended high above the open-air back porch in the shade to rest. The parents fly up next to the off-spring and feed them juicy bugs, beak to beak. At night, the babies return to their front porch nest for an extended overnight stay, chirping and chattering contentedly until their bed-time rejuvenation and dream-state begins. Thus, they are eventually taught to survive in the wild on their own, which brings me to the subject of the latest novel I've been reading. Absinthe, by Guido Eekhaut, published in 2009, and translated from the Dutch language into English in 2018, exemplifies logical, straight-forward, clear, concise thought processes written down in such a manner as to follow standard official protocol and strict judicial procedure. In other words, he provides enough facts in sufficient detail to get his point and message across. Which is quite unlike what many of us do, who tend to evade the issue, or avoid it altogether. You can draw your own conclusions about how we lead our orderly lives. For example, if someone were to ask about the book, we might be tempted to give a seemingly innocuous reply: On the surface, the novel appears to be about a team of cargo inspectors enforcing trade regulations and exercising fiscal responsibility in the Netherlands, but if someone ever makes the book into a film, they are going to need a team of stunt-men to fill-in the blanks. Then, somebody throws you another curve-ball. "How can you protect yourself from a seemingly impervious crash-test dummy automaton on a collision course with destiny?" Hence, you are no closer to the truth of the matter than the Man in the moon. A possible answer to the follow-up question might be, "You get a safety-man to attend the big event of the season, hosted by a wealthy, influential foreign investor, and let him commit multiple faux pas, embarrassing breeches of etiquette, unpleasant social blunders, and make a general spectacle of himself, just by being himself." Talking professional baseball now, a very impressive display of all-stars take the field in the novel. Several career-wise leading characters are developed in the course of the narrative, take turns stepping up to the plate and knocking the ball completely out of the park. You won't be disappointed. With so much hard-hitting action, there's never a dull moment. You won't have time to be bored. However, if you still feel the urge to go out and save the world, remember the next time you see a slippery worm wriggling around on the hot, steamy pavement after a summer rain shower. You can best assist the blind, slippery, defenseless little creature by gingerly picking it up with your fingers, putting it in the palm of your hand, and gently placing it back down again on the adjacent soft, green, grassy lawn. It may yet find its way toward Nirvana in this most natural of settings. My philosophy is save the earthworms. After all that, you're probably still wondering about the catchy book-title. I did a little research on the subject, and discovered that "Absinthe" is a liquorice-flavored alcoholic beverage, invented in Switzerland, that has "wormwood" as an active ingredient, among other added plant-based ingredients. Wormwood is an aromatic, perennial leafy plant typically found in Europe that has a spicy, bitter taste and some medicinal properties. What else can I tell you? Pour cold water over a spoonful of sugar to see if the clear green fairy-liquid in the glass below louches?
