As someone who have been both a student and an author/professor in writing workshops, I found several of the descriptions both fascinating and disappointing. If in fact Francine Prose’s descriptions are representative of the state of creative writing programs today, then they have truly fallen on hard times. While I had encountered the occasional talentless, argumentative, lazy, or derivative student writer, I also found at least three or four in each workshop who had the spark of creativity, who had done some serious reading, and were generous and thoughtful in critical comments. Nor was the self-righteous star-chamber atmosphere of political correctness anywhere near as blatant in my classes. But of course, they were mostly fellowship students in a graduate program not undergrads in a mediocre college with declining enrollment. That said, there is much to recommend Blue Angel. The students Prose describes certainly exist, and the world-weary professor and writer on the downhill slope of his career is not implausible. Throw in the current atmosphere of Puritanical me-tooism, the self-righteous viciousness which shouts down visiting lecturers or bans them entirely, and you have perfect setting for the protagonist. In this case, an author/professor unable to complete his novel, his idealism as a teacher frustrated by the semi-literate attempts of his students and stifled by the cultural morbidity of an isolated Vermont campus. In the midst of all this one girl submits a chapter of a novel and its freshness and originality intrigues him. She, herself, however, is unattractive, fidgety, an oddball disliked by her classmates. But as he reads her finely crafted novel, a chapter each a week, and comments on her work in his office, they gradually drift into a relationship which, but for a mishap, is not physically consummated, but whose near miss is recorded on tape by the manipulative student. Her purpose which unravels bit by bit seems not to gain any advantage, but simply to destroy his career and standing in the community. His colleagues obligingly conspire to ensure that happens. Prose’s novel is compelling because of her blatant political incorrectness, and her willingness to paint both central characters as complex entities who cannot be reduced as Lolita and Humbert-Humbert or even, as the title would suggest, the German teacher Immanuel and Lola from the film Blue Angel. Rather it smacks of the finality of Gustave and Tadzio from A Death in Venice. Passion, whether based on beauty of body or beauty of language, whether fostered by a blue pill or the blues of declining creativity, cannot be rescued by an infusion of youth. That path inevitably results in foolishness, death, dishonor or disillusionment.
